About this event

This course provides both practical and theoretical training for bricklayers who want to develop skills in traditional stonemasonry.
On successful completion of the course you will have knowledge of:
•    masonry and its differences to brickwork
•    masonry construction methods and materials
•    types of mortars and aggregates and their application
•    specialist masonry tools
•    types of walling construction
•    recognition of defects, their causes and appropriate interventions
•    rubble stone walling
•    consolidation, projecting courses, construction joints
•    heritage principles and practices
•    hot lime mixes
•    variations in stone
•    quoins and arches
•    pointing
•    ashlar masonry, cutting out defective stonework and mortar

How to book

HOW IS THE COURSE FUNDED
This course is provided free of charge, thanks to a grant from the Andrew Lloyd
Webber Foundation, supporting skills and training activities at Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings

WHO IS THE COURSE SUITABLE FOR?
Attendees at this course should have

  • completed Level 2 Bricklaying (before the course start date) or have equivalent
  • experience of working in the construction industry (shown on your CV)
  • A strong interest in getting into heritage work


IS THERE ANY FINANCIAL HELP AVAILABLE TO ATENDEES?

For successful applicants accepted on to the course, on completing and attending all 5 days, a bursary payment of £50 per day will be made to assist with your travel and subsistence.

In order to receive the bursary payment, you must have the right to work in the UK.
Evidence will be required at the start of the course.

Lunch will be provided each day, as well as tea and coffee.
