Experts warn historic buildings in the UK are at risk from skills shortage

The UK's much loved historic buildings are at risk due to a lack of available restoration skills within the construction industry Property Wire reports.

A recent YouGov survey commissioned  by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has found that young people have scant knowledge of the skills required for historic building repair and maintenance. This suggests as experienced craftspeople retire, many skills could be lost.

Skills For Trades – Heritage Building Repair Course

A six day certified course, January – March 2018, on understanding the repair and maintenance of pre-1919 buildings

Heritage Wood Occupations SUP (Specialist Upskilling Programme)

Candidates will increase their knowledge and skills in conservation and repair of historic timber framing, carpentry and joinery. Participants will develop a solid theoretical underpinning to practical on-site skills.

Heritage Stonemasonry SUP (Specialist Upskilling Programme)

Candidates will develop their knowledge and skills in conservation, repair and maintenance of stonework. Participants will also learn about lime mortars and temporary support, excavation and underpinning.
